"Maine voters showed their legendary independence by ignoring the fervid recommendations of the medical, legal, journalistic and political establishment by voting lustily in favor of medical marijuana."
                                        - Columnist Jim Brunelle, Portland Press Herald 11/5/99

The Maine Medical Marijuana Act, which took effect on December 22, 1999;

  • Increases treatment options for seriously or terminally ill patients.
  • Protects physicians from criminal and professional sanctions if they recommend medical marijuana to a patient
  • Provides patients with a legal defense if they are arrested for using medical marijuana recommended by a physician

Since 1996, voters in seven states have strongly supported similar medical marijuana initiatives.As the only state with a 1999 referendum, Mainers have built on the growing momentum for a national policy to allow medical marijuana use by patients with debilitating medical conditions.
